眼看着自己的设计变成现实世界中的实体,这大概是建筑师这份职业所特有的收获。不过,有些时候,即便是最吸引人的设计概念也会出于各种原因而无法付诸实现。中国台湾花莲的海岸旁,曾有一个让建筑圈、地产圈轰动的花莲住宅项目,它由丹麦顶流事务所BIG设计,以极具颠覆性的造型和超前理念,惊艳世界。可惜,它最终只停留在图纸和一座孤零零的样板间里。项目块地原本是一处工业厂区,却天生一副好底子:西倚中央山脉,东临太平洋,两条河流在三角洲交汇,具有极大壮观的景观潜力。面对如此绝版的地段,BIG的创始人Bjarke Ingels没有选择常规的方盒子,而是突发奇想:造一座连绵起伏的“山”。于是,一个“山地”住宅方案面世。它既不是对自然形态的简单模仿,也不是对传统居住形式的机械复制,而是通过对气候条件、功能需求和生态策略的综合考量,创造出一种兼具自然诗意与生活功能的“人造山景”。建筑被设计成层层叠叠的景观条纹,东西走向,既能框住壮阔的海景,又能为湿热的热带气候提供天然遮阳。清晨或傍晚,低角度的阳光被轻松挡在屋外,而南北向的柔和光线却能悄悄溜进每一户。屋顶覆满绿植,与条纹立面共同组成一套低能耗的“呼吸系统”。穿堂风一过,室内自然凉爽,建筑师用诗意的方式解决炎热潮湿热带气候这一硬核问题。项目还规划了步行道、地下慢跑道和观景平台,特别鼓励老年人过上健康积极的生活。这份细腻、以人为本的心思,让它在2014年入围了MIPIM奖决赛。然而,命运没有成全这份野心。受限于种种现实原因,完整的整体规划始终没能落地。唯一留在现实中的,是面积达1000平方米的样板间(下图),它在2015年建成,成为展示花莲住宅整体风貌与设计理念的窗口。有人说,最好的建筑不是征服自然,而是成为自然的一部分。BIG这个未能建成的“绿野仙踪”,是其长期探索“建筑与自然融合”设计哲学的重要实践成果。

Street life is being encouraged, the vehicle discouraged, and the built environment is undergoing a general upgrade. It is rising from the ground. Leaving the ground. To date, there are only a couple of designs that have taken on the new scale now permitted. The Excelsior Labs tower is one of them. A rich programme is neatly distributed across its vertical volume, sometimes effectively kept from sight through a curtain wall facade, sometimes making an appearance through severe and delightful breaks in the rising edifice. 这种设计效果显著,它不仅使塔楼的内部结构和系统清晰可见,还防止了建筑在一次动作中迅速升至最高点。相反,其上升是分阶段进行的,每一部分都通过精心雕琢的结构所展现的浓烈庆祝而被中断。在这些连接处,诸如大堂、咖啡厅、餐厅、健身中心以及顶层酒吧等公共空间得以形成,它们为办公楼和公寓提供了持续不断的活力与服务。最终形成的一系列功能,确保了这座建筑能够实现全天候的使用。这既不是夜间被废弃的办公大楼,也不是工作日空置的住宅单元。 The effect is significant in the manner in which it renders the internal structure and system of the tower visible, while also preventing the object from rising to its height in a single gesture. Instead, the rise occurs in increments, each segment interrupted by the bold celebration of the deftly handled structure. At these junctions occur events of a more public nature, such as the lobby, cafeterias, restaurants, a fitness gym, and a bar at the very peak. These come to inform and feed the stable diet of offices and apartments. The result is a collection of functions that ensure the building enjoys a 24/7 life span. Where one might expect a sheer surface leaving the ground behind, there is, instead, a series of volumes and voids (by contrast) that take individual steps upwards. The night further enhances this with the lighting focusing on the bare structural elements that interrupt the ascent. In the context of the city landscape, this renders the design with a more human scale than might be expected. It is also a neat little quirk that the boldness of the elements and their statements also serves to break down the size of the giant. Each serves a function under the wider canopy of a common existence. Small nuances often render an item as recognisable, as identifiable with a particular setting and city. And then there is international modernism and what followed. Styles and languages that no longer make such specific references. We are now global references. There are variations on a theme. The Excelsior Labs Tower adopts the familiar language of the glass-clad volume, its rhythm established over its wide, curtain wall surface. This is a standard formula. The structure sits behind this screen, existing independently. Only, this time round, the pattern is broken, the skin stops and starts. 每隔几层楼,流动的玻璃幕墙便会停下,露出内部结构,甚至可能是其运作机制本身。这不仅使设计意图更加清晰可辨,更在城市景观中形成一种引人注目的视觉语言。在城市的多元性中确立自身身份正变得越来越困难。若想做到这一点,又不引起负面评价,通过既大胆又克制的手势来实现,几乎是不可能的。等待着的,是那些窥视者。 Every few floors, the fluid glass facade comes to a halt, revealing the internal structure, if not the mechanism itself. This, in effect, not only renders the programme of the design more legible, it provides a visual language that stands out within the cityscape. Identity within the plurality of the city is increasingly difficult to establish. To achieve this without drawing negative remarks, through gestures that are at once bold and restrained, is nigh on impossible. Its vocabulary talks of an almost brutal transparency, starting with the structural system and proceeding to categorically define elements according to their function. This is most apparent at the 'junctions' between main elements, where the structure is exposed, and common functions are located. A further development of this is the creation of hub offices over double-height spaces, with their inherent individuality. The scheme includes both residential and office elements in a move that reflects a wider urban trend which is rapidly becoming relevant to the island's cityscapes. There is a trend towards designs being wrapped in a complete skin.
